On March 11th, 2019 Point Pleasant Borough High School held the annual Be On Point assembly.  This year public speaker Lee Ruben addressed students on setting goals and making sure that when we set goals our aim it to achieve our highest potential.

The assembly took place periods 2, 3, 8 and 9. The staff had many activities planned after the speaker was done. Some events included; Jeopardy, donut eating contests and duct taping your teachers and principal.  The theme of the day was related to change and how you can adapt to it.  Mr. Johnson, one of the organizers of the event, said, “We have change coming.  Are we as students and teachers going to whine and cry about it, deal with it, or capitalize on it?   Let’s as a school come together and capitalize on the opportunity in front of us!”

We have change coming. Are we as students and teachers going to whine and cry about it, deal with it, or capitalize on it? Let’s as a school come together and capitalize on the opportunity in front of us!

— Mr. Johnson

Mr. Ruben spoke to the seniors about setting goals because, as seniors, we have a lot of choices to make and goals to set for the next four years of our lives. As future college students, we are expected to set goals and make sure that our goals are attainable with hard work and dedication.

Mr, Johnson, the organizer of the assembly, had some great takeaways from the day as well as the guest speaker, “He didn’t disappoint.  My takeaways from Lee Rubin.  1) if you’re gonna play, play to WIN. whatever it is. 2) understand yourself, have an identity. 3) establish specific and LOFTY goals. Discuss them, do they have the eyebrow effect?  4. Adversity. It happens! How you deal and cope with it. Adversity is 10% of what happens to you, 90% of how you deal with it,” said Mr. Johnson.

During the assembly activities, the freshman, sophomores and juniors were able to tape US History teacher Mrs. Billerman to a wall while seniors had the opportunity of taping Principal Karcich during the afternoon assembly.

The Be on Point assembly was a great way to teach students how to make lofty goals for our futures. This may apply to students setting a goal for what they want to do after college, or to underclassmen simply wanting to boost their scores on the SATs.

Setting goals is a part of everyday life. After hearing Mr. Ruben speak about how he creates goals, it definitely opened our eyes as a school that goals are made to be achieved.  Thank you to the Be on Point committee for organizing this fun and engaging event.  A special shout out to Ms. Bergmann, Ms. Salvatoriello and Mr. Johnson for making it all happen.
