Meet Ron — Skulls & Gemstones

Columbus flea market is a diverse area of land that is a beacon for people who like trinkets and antiques. Wandering up and down the aisles of clothes, cell phone accessories, jewelry and much more was an interesting experience to say the least. With so much to look at and so many people to talk to, it was overall a great day filled with information and appreciation for the people selling items at the market.

Ron is a man who sells Chinese stones and carved objects made of precious gemstones. He has been in the flea market business for over fifty years, selling items at different markets in New Jersey. Ron was in the military for thirteen years and traveled the world where he met his wife, who makes some of the carvings that he sells. They have a house in China, where his wife is from.

The couple sells a lot of Jade from Indonesia, it is very popular. On his table were little skull carvings made from various gemstones from China. One skull that caught a lot of attention was the fire opal skull.

“When you hold it up to the light you can see the red coloring in the middle which looks like fire,” Ron demonstrated holding the skull up to the sun.

Ron’s table had a lot of different items but he was most excited about his skulls because his wife carved them herself and he was proud of them. Each skull also came with a handmade protective pouch, also made by his wife. Each pouch was unique just like the skulls, which made the purchase all the more special.

The day at the flea market was one to remember. A day filled with learning about people and actually taking the time to get off the phones and actually have human interaction. It’s amazing what people can learn from actually talking to people instead of relying on cellphones to do the communication for us.
