On September 15 there were rough waters in the Manasquan inlet. A fishing boat was trying to get through the inlet but strong waves from the hurricane made a 10-foot wave that crushed the 31-foot boat. A father and two sons were on the boat, two of them survived and recovered, but one of the crew went missing.
A witness, 17-year-old Nathan Scott and his friends saw two of the victims floating in the inlet screaming about their boat crashing. “I can’t imagine how freezing cold they were,” Scott told the Asbury Park Press.
Derek, the formerly missing victim, was sleeping in the cabin of the boat as the wave crashed. Derek, along with his father and brother, were coming back from a fishing trip. It was foggy which caused poor visibility. They turned on the spotlight and right when they did, a wave crashed which ultimately turned over the boat.
After the incident, drones and rescue teams went on the hunt for Derek, which took days. They started searching the canals and did not find him. Many pieces of debris from the boat were found by Seaside Heights. Even an inflatable raft was found, as that automatically inflates when a boat starts to sink.
Derek’s body was missing for about week and was finally recovered on September 23rd off of the Channel Drive by the docks. Derek’s dad and brother were recently released from the hospital and friends made a GoFundMe page for the Narby family.

My heart and prayers are with all of you. God needed him. None of us know when. God called and Derek answered. God bless him, his family and all who love him. ❤️✝️❤️✝️
