Disney has recently announced their newest animated film called Wish to celebrate their 100-year anniversary. The movie will be in theaters November 22, 2023, straying from Disney’s recent pattern of sending movies straight to their streaming platform, Disney+.
There has been lots of love towards the movie, but also lots of backlash. People have been asking Disney to go back to the original 2D design seen in Silver Eras films like Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella. The studio decided to compromise and make the background of the movie 2D while keeping the characters and objects 3D. This outraged people even more because they felt that the trailer seemed unfinished. However, there have been responses from people on TikTok and X who claim to have worked in the industry that say they no longer have the technology to make a fully 2D film. It does not seem like Disney will be heading in the direction of their Silver Era movies anytime soon.
Despite this backlash, the movie’s trailer has allotted the most views since Disney’s 2019 film, Frozen II. Disney has decided to use this movie as an opportunity to celebrate the stories they’ve shared throughout the years.
“How can we deconstruct that in a more sophisticated way, but also have a lot of celebration of the 100th?” Jennifer Lee, chief creative officer at Walt Disney Animation, told Entertainment Weekly when talking about the studio’s ideas while creating the story.
“We’ve really looked at [the anniversary] as a chance to reflect on the incredible resonance these stories have had over the years,” Alan Bergman, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, writes to Entertainment Weekly. Disney wanted this movie to celebrate the company’s journey throughout the century.
With the movie’s release coming up quickly, there are still questions about how the public will react and how the movie will look in its full form. Will the reviews be positive or will Disney’s Wish disappoint the audience?
