The Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers went 5-0 to start the year after facing off in last season’s NFC Championship Game, but this year, they both lost to back-up quarterbacks on the road in Week six. The 49ers and Eagles were the only teams without losses left in the NFL, but with two big upsets against the Jets and the Browns, there are no remaining teams undefeated.
The 49ers and the Eagles both seemed to have a dominating defense and commanding offense. So to say both teams losing in the same week is shocking, is an understatement. The Jets were able to beat the Eagles because of the huge amount of turnovers they forced. Jalen Hurts threw three interceptions and there was a fumble. This was the first time the Jets had beaten the Eagles in franchise history, with 13 match-ups against each other.
The 49ers had a few key injuries during the game, including their two best weapons Christian McCaffery and Debo Samuel. They also lost their best lineman, left tackle Trent Williams. This really negatively affected their offense and prevented them from scoring. Then in the final seconds of the game, the 49ers drove down the field. While losing 19-17, their rookie kicker, Jake Moody, lined up for a 41-yard field goal, which isn’t much of a challenge to the standard NFL kicker, but he missed the chip-in to win the game.
Both of these games were completely shocking losses, especially since both the Jets and Browns had back-up quarterbacks playing. Surprisingly, both stepped up to the challenge and were able to perform against exceptionally strong defenses.
