Korean boy band BTS is taking their mandatory military service. Starting just a few weeks ago all members are now in the military. From December 2022 to December 2023 members Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook enlisted in the military. More specifically, members Jimin & Jungkook left Dec. 12th, 2023, RM & V left Dec. 11th, 2023, Jin Dec. 13th, 2022, J-hope April 18th, 2023, and Suga Sept. 22nd, 2023.
In South Korea males under 30 must take mandatory military service for at least two years. All young, able-bodied men between the ages of 18 to 28 must serve between 18 to 21 months in the military. Prior to the group’s enlistment, the members all completed solo projects. Although they are likely to return as a group in 2025, fans all over social media fear the group may split up.
Regarding K-pop idols, there aren’t any special exceptions when it comes to serving in the South Korean Army, unless the individual has citizenship in another country. As for if someone has an injury, the service could be delayed or in some circumstances an alternative. BTS member Suga is serving as a social service agent due to surgery he had on his shoulder, making him unable to serve regularly.
While all BTS fans are upset over the enlistment, they look forward to 2025.
