Gypsy Rose was only 7 or 8 when her mom, Dee Dee thought of the “brilliant” idea to keep her daughter in a wheelchair. It all started when Gypsy and her grandfather got into a motorcycle accident. From the accident, Gypsy suffered with a minor abrasion on her knee so the doctor gave her a wheelchair to get around with. At this time, her mom also diagnosed her with leukemia and muscle dystrophy and insisted that she needed a wheelchair and feeding tube.
As the years went on, Dee Dee continued to treat Gypsy as if she had leukemia, muscle dystrophy, and asthma. Gypsy’s mom told doctors that she has the “mental capacity of a seven year old due to brain damage”. She listed additional conditions, such as epilepsy, a sugar allergy, vision and hearing impairment, and more. Dee Dee continued to lie about Gypsy’s age everywhere she went and even to Gypsy herself, who didn’t know her real age. Dee Dee allegedly kept files on files of all of her medical records, but when Hurricane Katrina hit, Dee Dee “lost” all the files and had to write them out herself.
One night Dee Dee threw Gypsy a party and Gypsy snuck a cupcake. When her mom saw, she rushed her to the hospital. As the doctor and Dee Dee were talking outside of the room Gypsy was in, the doctor confirmed she wasn’t allergic to sugar. Little does Dee Dee know Gypsy heard that. Night after night Gypsy began to stay up late after her mom went to bed and watched makeup videos online while eating junk food.
Dr. Bernardo Flasterstein was one of the many doctors who treated Gypsy. He caught on that Gypsy and Dee Dee weren’t telling the full truth, and informed Dee Dee that Gypsy’s prior diagnosis could be incorrect. Unhappy with his opinion, she stormed out of the office and never returned. He never said anything to authorities or child protective services was because he didn’t have enough evidence, and without evidence, no one could do anything or believe Dr. Flasterstein.
Gypsy always knew that she could walk, but her mother forced her to stay in the wheelchair. According to Gypsy Rose herself, according to an article published in People, she says, “Whenever I’d question it my mother would say I’d had a seizure the night before and didn’t remember. There was always an excuse.”
Going on, Gypsy bought a computer and hid it from her mom. Aleah Woodmanseee, their neighbor, used to tell Gypsy about her boyfriend. Gypsy always wanted a boyfriend, so she loved it when she talked about him and all the fun things they would do. One day Aleah told Gypsy about dating websites, so Gypsy thought she might try it out. Then, she met Nick Godejohn and poor little Gypsy fell in love. They used to talk all night and one night, Dee Dee found her computer and started smashing it and tied Gypsy up for being bad. Gypsy had a phone and started texting Nick off of there.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Nick Godejohn then come up with a plan. This plan was to kill Gypsy’s mom. Gypsy had the whole day planned out with her mom like giving each other manicures, and then Gypsy put Dee Dee to bed and promised to be “a good girl”. When Dee Dee fell asleep, Gypsy texted Nick saying “let me know when you are at the door with the gloves”. This all happened in the matter of minutes. Gypsy went into the bathroom and Nick went into the room where Dee Dee lay, and continuously stabbed her in the back 17 times.
After he was done he knocked on the bathroom door to get Gypsy out and then cleaned himself off. They continued to pack up the rest of Gypsy’s stuff and within days they took a bus to Wisconsin where Nick lived. On their way there, they had to stay at a hotel for a couple nights because their bus tickets weren’t purchased correctly. When they got off the bus Nick’s mom picked them up and brought them to his house. A couple days later the cops came banging on Nick’s door finding Gypsy and Nick hiding in a closet.
At first they were both being charged with 1st degree murder, but the court decided to separate their case because they are two different people who were involved in the murder in different ways. In June of 2015, they both plead not guilty to the first-degree murder charge. Gypsy’s attorney made a plea deal for her, and she plead guilty to second-degree murder and was facing 10 years of prison. Meanwhile Nick Godejon plead guilty in 2018 and is facing life in prison.
Gypsy got out December 28, 2023 at 3:30pm. She served 85% of her sentence. The first thing she did when she got out was take a selfie that was captioned according to TMZ “first selfie of freedom”. Now she is living her best life with her husband Ryan Scott Anderson. She also rekindled her light with her father.
