The New York City ball drop is an iconic event! The First New Year’s Eve ball drop in Times Square happened in 1907 and has been a tradition ever since. Tons of people go into New York City and gather around Times Square to watch the ball drop and ring in the new year all together.
This year it was estimated that around a million people gathered to be part of the celebration. People lined up around Time Square as early as 8:00 am to make sure that they had the perfect spot to capture the ball drop and witness the performances. Crowds were entertained by talented performers including, Sabrina Carpenter, LL Cool J, Megan Thee Stallion, Jelly Roll, and Tyla.
New Yorker’s and many tourists had the opportunity to write wishes on confetti pieces that people submitted. People wished for many things. Some write their wishes for the new year, while others write their goals or resolutions. It is a fun way to celebrate and spread positive vibes throughout the city!
Some fun facts about the ball drop include that the current ball weighs around 11,875 pounds! This year the shiny ball was covered in over 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles and was illuminated by over 32,000 LED lights. This creates a beautiful light and color display. The ball drops exactly at midnight and is followed by a fireworks display to add even more excitement to the night.
