Point Borough Girls Basketball entered the WOBM Christmas Classic this Christmas break. They entered the tournament in the Ray Cervino bracket as the 6th seed. Their first game in the tournament was against the number 2 seed, Rumson Fair-Haven. They unfortunately took a tough loss which forced them into the consolation bracket where they faced Toms River North. Point Borough Girls won against the Mariners of Toms River North 61-29. Thus, leading them into their next game against the 5th seed, Toms River East. This game was one to watch for sure.
The Panthers went into this game hungry for a win. Their first loss made them determined to come out of the tournament with more wins than losses. They fought long and hard. The game was close the whole 4 quarters and it ultimately came down to the very last second. At the end of the first half, it was Point Boro 19 and Toms River East 23. The Panthers were dead set on winning. They did not back down. Their fight lasted the whole game and it paid off. The final score turned out to be 49-45 and the Panthers would take the victory.
Sarah Dahl led the Panthers to victory with 16 points. When asking Dahl about the game she states, “I wanted to win because I have always been competitive against that team. I had the other team and their student section trying to get in my head but it just motivated me to do better.”
The Panthers came out on top. It shows their determination and hard work for the sport. They have worked throughout the off-season and hard in-season to earn their credit. They have many opponents that will be hard for them but they will be able to rally.
When speaking with Coach David Drew, the Panthers head coach, about the game, he listed all of their opponents leading up to the win and he explained, “this game showed our potential for the season.”
The Lady Panthers are determined to improve their record throughout the season, hopefully qualify for the Shore Conference Tournament after not qualifying last year, and get a good rank in the State Tournament. We wish them luck and can’t wait to see their progress during the season.
