For decades, playing video games has been a popular activity for kids and teens all over the world. Not only did video games help cure boredom during quarantine, but the music offered an emotional escape as well. Some soundtracks are not only catchy or beautiful, but are now critically acclaimed. Last year, games such as Stardew Valley, Minecraft, and Call Of Duty have original music that has caught the Grammys’ attention.
The Grammy Awards is an event for all musical artists who earn recognition for the music they make. Until last year, there has never been a category for video games. Last season, on February 5th, 2023, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla became the first video game to officially win a Grammy for the Best Video Game Score. There were only around 4 to 6 nominees for the Grammys and, surprisingly, many were not the well-known music that people grew up with, like Mario Brothers or The Sims.
This year, the category nominees were graphic and clearly for older audiences, as there were no creative building games. The nominees are: Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical, God of War: Ragnarök, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and Hogwarts Legacy.
Do you think video game soundtracks are fit for such prestigious awards, such as the Grammys?
