On February 19 at 9:56am a 16 year old suspect came to school and got a hold of a gun. The student refused to put it down, even when the cops told them to, and was thus fired upon by police. Thankfully, no students were injured and the suspect is recovering. The school, Mesquite School in Texas, is now planning to enhance student safety measures.
On the day of the incident, it is unclear how the student was left in a room alone but somehow obtained a gun. When the potential threat was identified, the school called for help – a SWAT police truck, ambulance, and many police officers in tactical gear arrived. The 16 year old was denying police commands, so the cops had to fire.
The 16 year old is now being hospitalized with a leg wound. Police say once he has recovered, he will be sent to Dallas County Juvenile Detention Center.
Police are still investigating as to how and why the suspect entered the empty office and refused to drop the weapon. The Juvenile Detention Center will also conduct a private investigation into the matter.
The school is grateful that no other students were injured and are now looking putting more safety precautions around the school.
