The Oscars, also known as the Academy Awards, is the most prestigious award show for the film industry. Located in Beverly Hills, California, they award nominees in top categories, such as Best Picture, Best Actress and Actor, and Best Director. In 2023, fantastic films were released. Many grossed over a billion dollars. In the recent 2024 categories, the top movies were Oppenheimer, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon, and, of course, Barbie.
Barbie was the highest-grossing movie in 2023. Released on July 21st, the movie earned 1.4 billion dollars. The Barbie movie, directed by Greta Gerwig, showcases Barbie’s journey from Barbie land to the real world. The reason the movie gained so much popularity was due to its iconic marketing and, of course, its beautiful meaning. Greta created this movie to show the hardships and realities of being a woman, teaching many about patriarchy and feminism. This comedic film touched many women’s hearts.
When the Oscar list was released on January 23rd, 2024, many fans noticed Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were not nominated for the big categories. Many began to speculate that they were snubbed.
Greta directed the top movie that year, yet she was not nominated for best director. Margot Robbie played a fantastic role as Barbie, and she too was not nominated for best actress. Although they didn’t get any Oscar nominations, some of their co-stars did. Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken, was nominated for best supporting actor. America Ferrera, who played Gloria, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. The movie was also nominated for Best Motion Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
As published by CBS News, Gosling shared his emotions online about the recent events, saying, “There is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.”
Many people online also shared similar feelings, as well: “Nominating Ken but not Barbie is literally the plot of the movie,” Brad Meltzer wrote in a Thread published in The New York Times.
Robbie finally shared the recent news online, saying, “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed” (NBC News). Even though Margot was not nominated, she shares that being in this film was much more.
