After the Chiefs’ Super Bowl Victory in 2023, the team was looking like the beginning of a dynasty, making the Super Bowl three out of the previous four seasons. Under Patrick Homes and Andy Reid, they have made the conference championship in every one of their five seasons together. Although they were looking dominant, but the 2024 season was going to be his biggest challenge yet. With the least amount of help Mahomes has had in his entire career and a very young defense, nobody knew what was in store for the Chiefs.
To start the season, it all looked awful. They lost to the Lions in a heartbreaking 21-20 score with many drops from wide receivers Kadarius Toney and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. One of which led to a game sealing Pick-6. There was lots of speculation going on that the Chiefs just weren’t as good as they used to be and that Mahomes always needed help. But he brought those haters down by winning their next 6 and taking the 1 seed in the AFC.
But it all took a turn after an unexpected loss to the Broncos and some more losses coming from the Bills and the Eagles. They were looking like they couldn’t beat good teams or even frauds. Finishing off the season going 11-6 and clinching a career worse for Mahomes number three seed in the AFC, many believed they could lose in the first round of the playoffs to the Miami Dolphins.
In the coldest game ever in Arrowhead stadium, with a temperature of -11 degrees, the Chiefs dominated an inexperienced Dolphins team who couldn’t seem to score, winning the game 26-7. After this game, it became much harder. Mahomes would have to play in his first away playoff game in his career and against a dominant Buffalo Bills team. The game was close the whole way and the Bills just needed to make a field goal to bring it to overtime, until the wind had other ideas and he missed the kick. The missed kick brought the Chiefs to their 6th straight conference title and game and a chance for Mahomes and the Chiefs to go to the Super Bowl and win for back to back seasons. Something no team had done since the 03-04 New England Patriots.
The Baltimore Ravens were the most dominant team this season had to offer. With the MVP Lamar Jackson at Quarterback and an elite run game against a Chiefs lackluster run defense, it was looking like an easy win for the Ravens. However, the Chiefs’ young defense led by Trent McDuffie, Chris Jones, and George Karlaftus shut their offense down and only allowed 10 points in a 17-10 victory bringing them back to the Super Bowl.
The storyline going into the game questioned if Mahomes had enough to carry his entire offense to another Super Bowl Victory. With Travis Kelce struggling this year along with many others of the wide receivers, it was a struggle bus the entire season. But with Rookie WR Rashee Rice and 2nd year running back Isiah Pacheco, they had a chance. The game started very slow with just a 10-3 score at halftime and the Chiefs’ offense struggling a lot, it was looking like an easy win for the 49ers’ elite offense.
Patrick Mahomes had other plans as he came into the second half looking to score and get the win. He scored early in the second half and brought the game into overtime after a few impressive made kicks from Harrison Butker bringing the score to 19-19.
The twist with this game was the new overtime rules that nobody has seen before. Under the new rules, both teams have a chance to get the ball and score, but when Patrick Mahomes led a 75-yard drive for the final time this season, it gave the Chiefs the victory and they became back to back champions.
As Patrick Mahomes played an incredible game, winning MVP, many recognize that this team has officially became a dynasty.
