This past month was the annual Grammy Awards and Taylor Swift, once again, made history. However, her night of celebration also brought some controversy.
Swift took home the Pop Album of the Year award, as well as Album of the Year award, for the fourth time. She is the first person to ever win the AOTY award four times, more than anyone ever has. Not only are there critics questioning “who deserved” the Album of the Year award, but there is also commentary on what happened after she won. Swift was sitting with very good friend Lana Del Rey, another amazing singer-songwriter, who was also nominated for the AOTY award. When the winner, Swift, was announced by icon Celine Dion, she brought Lana on stage with her to accept the award, despite the fact that Lana lost the category and has never even received a Grammy.
Many people in the audience were angry at this and thought that Taylor was being obnoxious, unnecessary, and rude towards her friend, as she did not win. According to Buzzfeed, Lana has seemingly come to Taylor’s defense, claiming she “saying that she didn’t feel even an ‘ounce’ of ‘negative emotion'” at the ceremony.
Another incident that caught media attention was Taylor’s awkward interaction with Celine Dion. Viewers have said that Taylor ignored Dion when she accepted the Grammy from her. As noted in Time, “some social media users have criticized what they deemed a lack of sufficient respect shown by Swift toward presenter Celine Dion.”
Taylor was very taken back by this moment and was upset when she heard people spreading this rumor, on top of the one about drama with Lana. Yet, Taylor isn’t known to be a malicious person, who intentionally hurts others. A fan stuck up for Swift on X, tweeting, “Was she clearly distracted by someone behind her at the exact moment Celine Dion handed her the award? 100000%. Stop overanalyzing her every move looking for proof that she should be hated because you already don’t like her.”
This whole situation seems to be blown out of proportion. Celebrities will get hate, no matter what they do. Although Taylor swift is loved globally by a large fan base, there are always going to be people who try to bring her down, as well. Hopefully, she can “shake it off”.
