Saquon Barkley was the Giants running back for six years, drafted out of Penn State in 2018. Barkley’s contract ran out with the Giants and as he wasn’t franchise tagged, the Giants didn’t even offer him a contract. On March 13, 2024, seemingly out of nowhere, Barkley signed with the Philidelphia Eagles.
The deal is a three-year, $37.75 million contract with $26 million in guaranteed money. Many fans were upset and outraged that he switched up on them and signed with a divisional rival.
As reported by Sports Illustrated, Barkley said in a press conference discussing his signing with the Eagles, “‘I don’t think I really handled it the right way on social media,’ he said. ‘I think I could have given a proper goodbye.”
Although Barkley regrets the way he left the Giants, believing there was a better way to do it, he hopes hat fans can still appreciate his rationale. The Giants are in need of a big rebuild and they wouldn’t be able to do that by paying so much for Barkley given how much money he deserves.
I think this was a good move for Barkley because he has solidified himself as a great running back. Now he needs to be on a good team and aid them in getting to the Super Bowl.
