Mark Coleman, UFC Hall of Famer, was the first heavyweight champion and had retired with a 16-10 record in 2008. On March 12th, the 59 year old’s real-life skills were put to the test once he was woken by his dog Hammer who started barking due to a fire. Mark heroically saved both of his parents from their Fremont, Ohio home around 4:00 a.m. by carrying each of them out and putting them at a safe distance from the house.
Coleman tried to go back in to save his dog Hammer, but couldn’t reach him in time. Coleman was then airlifted to the nearest hospital after being covered in black soot and having difficulties breathing. Other sources say he was in very critical shape. His daughter Morgan, one of the sources, posted on her Instagram including how her father is battling for his life.
Luckily a few days later, he was responsive and awake telling ESPN, “I swear to God, I’m so lucky”. Coleman went on to say how thankful he is that his parents and himself are safe and sound after a few scary days. Even though he lost the house and a furry friend to the fire, he is grateful to be alive and doing well in recovery. On March 18th he was released from the hospital and only has the complaint for sore lungs and stinging eyes.
A GoFundMe was created by his daughters in order to cover medical expenses and has received over $120,000 in donations from 2,600+ donors.
Authorities still do not know what caused the blaze but it is expected that the fire started from the stove but there is no confirmation. Not only is Coleman a figure to look up to in the UFC Octagon, but now in any heroic act that one may think of. His skill and loyalty was truly put to the test, and he has shown how important it is to look after the ones you love.
