The eclipse that took place on April 8th, 2024, was a total solar eclipse that was visible in parts of the United States, including our state New Jersey. Other states were able to see a total solar eclipse, which is when the moon completely covers the sun, creating a stunning celestial event.
In New Jersey, on that particular day, people were able to witness what we call a partial solar eclipse. This means that the moon only partially covered the sun, casting a shadow over the Earth and creating a unique sight in the sky.
People in Point Pleasant who experienced the eclipse would have noticed a gradual darkening of the sky as the moon moved in front of the sun. There was an extensive push to use proper eye protection when viewing a solar eclipse to prevent eye damage. This was because the possible exposure to light on our eyes could cause partial to full blindness or other serious damage.
Eclipses like the one we were able to experience are fascinating events that have captured the attention of people for centuries, and each one offers a chance to observe the beauty and wonder of our solar system in action. Unfortunately, in Point Pleasant the clouds hid the sun when it was at its peak so we didn’t observe a perfect view. Overall, although we could have been in the path of totality or a had a clearer sky, the town was still gathered by excitement.
