Senioritis. A term coined by high school graduates and college graduates alike. Senioritis is a decline of motivation and or performance. The side effects are a drop in grades, not completing assignments on time or at all, excess tardiness and absences.
Student Lexi Y. mentions, “Senioritis is very real. It’s not fun . . . I don’t want to do any of my work. I’ve fully given up on school.” The severity of senioritis varies on each individual student. While Lexi seems to be doing just good enough. Many seniors’ grades have dropped lower than they ever have before.
I personally believe that senioritis is very real. I always thought it was a hoax . . . until I became a senior, but now I understand its drastic effects. Speaking of its drastic effects, I’m turning in this article late. The irony! I’m just trying to keep up my grades the best I can until the end of the school year. It’s so close but feels so far.
When asked to explain the effects of senioritis on her students, English and Journalism teacher, Mrs. Jensen explains, “Yes . . . every year. It’s always hard for many of them as the weather gets warmer. When you’re lost in the future you often forget the present.” She then tags a piece of advice onto her last statement. She said, “My piece of advice would be to live in the moment because before you know it you’ll wish you could go back.”
There are many ways to combat this “illness.”
- Set Goals. Taking small steps towards your goal will get you there.
- Reward Yourself. For doing what you are supposed to!
- Get Organized and On Schedule. It’ll keep you on the right track.
- Surround Yourself With Support. People to cheer you on!
- Change Things Up. Do some exercise or pick up a hobby!
- Take a Break. Don’t do too much.
- Remember What You’re Working Toward. College. Your senior transcript does in fact get sent to your college!
Senioritis is hitting hard for many seniors . . . but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. There is about only two weeks left to stick it out and soon students will be set for Summer.
