LASH! POSE! FLASH! FLASH!
In 1984, the first-ever Video Music Awards (VMAs) was held in New York City at Radio City Music Hall, where the Rockettes perform. It was originally nicknamed the “Super Bowl for Youths” since it drew in so many teens and young adults. In 2001 it became a yearly event, such as the Grammys. But what are the VMAs?
The award show is run by MTV which is known as Music Television, it is a cable television show that always heavily streams music videos. It’s also where interviews can be held, such as the famous feud between Christina Aguilera and Eminem that started when Em wrote his song “The Real Slim Shady” after Christina made comments about him during her interview.
Jumping forward to this year’s VMAs, Eminem performed his latest album The Death Of Slim Shady, featuring his new popular tracks “Houdini” and “Somebody Save Me” (Feat. JellyRoll).
The 2024 winners include Katy Perry, Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, SZA, and more. Taylor Swift, who has won seven awards since 2009, holds the record for the most VMAs with a total of thirty awards.
The VMAs are unique in that they are always hosted by a musical artist; Last year’s host was Nicki Minaj and this year’s host was Megan Thee Stallion. Megan Thee Stallion made headlines after a clip of her cosplaying Britney Spears’ iconic 2001 “Slave 4 U” performance went viral as she freaked out over a snake.
The show was postponed from its usual date due to the presidential debate, ensuring there was no audience pull between the two events. Regardless of the change, the VMAs always bring exciting performances and memorable moments, and this year lived up to the expectations.
