Mike Tyson, nicknamed “Iron Mike” and known as the “Baddest Man on the Planet”, was a world heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990. Iron Mike has competed in 59 fights, winning 50 of them, 44 fight by knockout. Iron Mike is commonly brought up in the conversation of best boxer to ever fight.
Tyson grew up in Albany, New York and had a harsh childhood, growing up in a household with substance-abuse. As a kid his fighting desire started as a bully killed a pigeon Tyson treated as a pet. A man that goes by the name of Cus D Amato took him under his wing and taught him the sport of boxing starting the history of “The Baddest Man on the Planet”.
On the other side of the ring, Jake Paul is a well-known name in the Gen Z community. Jake Paul’s career started on a streaming app called YouTube, making millions while growing a large fan-base. He recently started his boxing debut picking as people say “gimmik fights”, meaning picking known weaker opponents for Paul to have a higher chance of winning.
The fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson was the first sports game ever to be streamed on Netflix. Netflix brought in approximately 65 million household viewers, including the AT&T stadium in Dallas, Texas, totaling around 108 million viewers, according to MMA Fighting.
The fight started with two polar opposite walkouts: Jake Paul had his crew, containing Logan Paul and his fight instructor, drive to the ring in a Chevy Krew Kut. Jake was wearing a diamond-covered boxing outfit estimated to cost around one million dollars, as reported by The Economic Times.
In complete contrast, Mike Tyson walked out alone during the fight, showing his age and stumbling caused by a recent leg surgery.
The fight started at 8:00pm Eastern time. After they touched gloves, the bell rang starting the fight. Both fighters lasted all eight rounds. Tyson threw 97 punches during the fight, with a low amount of 18 of his punches landing and hitting his target. Paul threw 278 punches, with 78 successfully hitting Iron Mike.
During the fight, you could see Tyson’s stamina not able to keep up with the fight and slowly losing balance and force. After Paul saw Tyson losing stamina, the fight ended. The heavyweight brawl seen to be the fight of the year ended disappointing many from the lack of showmanship.
ESPN reported, “All three judges scored the fight for Paul, 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73.” Jake Paul won the fight disappointing many fans as 18.1 million dollars was spent on those betting that Tyson would win the fight.
Regardless of the outcome, both opponents were winners in terms of financial gain – Paul, the “winner”, was paid forty million dollars and the “loser”, Tyson, was paid twenty million dollars.
