Cookies, a heart warming treat that are filled with the love of those who make and sell them. So, what happens when Americans come to find that cookies sold from beloved girls have deadly metals that threaten to take the life of many? A recent discovery has now caused a massive nation wide concern.
On March 12, 2025, it was found that Girl Scout cookies may contain dangerous heavy metals through a study commissioned by Moms Across America and GMO science. According to Fox10 Phoenix, the results of this study revealed that there was glyphosate and heavy metals that exceeded the EPA and FDA regulations of safety requirements of food.
Although there has been no evidence of any illnesses or deaths, a class-action lawsuit has been placed against Girls Scouts of America on March 10th, 2025, claiming that the organization is selling food with toxins. In response, the Girl Scouts have stated that their cookies are safe to consume and meet all food safety regulations set by the FDA and other relevant authorities.
The trace amounts of heavy metals are common within the food supply chain as and are not considered harmful as the levels found in Girl Scout cookies. According to USA Today “…Trace amounts of substances in question naturally occur in many foods due to environmental contaminants and do not pose a health risk.”
The organization emphasizes that heavy metals being found in food is common within the food industry and does not pose much of a threat to the consumers, despite the public’s worry.
Although this incident may have caused some concern and new found fears for many, it is a good reminder to be more aware of the food that we consume and the ingredients that come in it.
The Girl Scouts reaffirm that their cookies are safe and the metals found are there due to environmental contaminants which naturally occur in soil, so the trace amounts aren’t much of a concern. The fabulous delicious cookies we love to buy and eat are safe to consume!
