As we approach the beginning of May, it’s time to look back at the first half of the season for our spring sports. When looking at the girls’ lacrosse team, it is clear that it is one of the strongest teams in school history, as they just moved up a division and had one of the best starts with an 8-4 record so far. They have won eight out of twelve games, with all of their losses being within 2 points. The dynamic mix of strong newcomers, returning players, and new coaching staff has led the team to a great record so far.
Incoming players have made a big impact on the team in the last few years, with fourteen out of the twenty-five girls being underclassmen. These new girls have brought fresh ideas and talent to the team, making them a threat on the field. Some notable underclassmen include Aubrey Gilbert, one of the leading goal scorers, Lucy Hauser, a top midfielder, and Mary Pfeifer, their top defender. Their talent and stats have helped uplift the team and bring wins against tough competitors.
Many returning players have also made a big impact on the field. On the attack side, Lily Scalabrini and Kayden Cilento add points to the board, while Sabrina Davis leads the defense. Francesca Skowronski is the team’s top midfielder, leading in draw controls and just recently hitting her one-hundred point milestone. All while Sloane Schwertheim mans the goal, saving some amazing shots.
Another key to this team’s success has been its coaching staff. The team has gained a new head coach in the past three years in Elizabeth Kolb. Kolb and her husband, Nick, have recently come to the team and brought their extensive lacrosse experience with them. Their expert coaching and skilled playmaking have greatly improved the team’s success over the past three years. They also have experience with skilled coaching at the JV and Freshman levels, with our own Ms. Padula leading the JV through many wins and the freshman coach, Ms. Onnembo, creating and leading our very first girls lacrosse freshman team.
Recently, the girls just competed in their last division game versus Central Regional, and they celebrated their senior night versus Point Beach with a win. Come out to support the girls at their Morgan’s Message dedication game on Monday, May 5th, where they will vs Middletown South, and on Saturday, May 10th, where they will have their first Shore Conference tournament game.
