Basketball Preview 2019-2020 Season

The Point Boro Boys Basketball team last year did not meet expectations as they were expected to. The team finished with a 10-16 record and lost in the first round of playoffs to Pleasantville, 76-62. The team is returning two of their starters, seniors Sam Young and Alex Drucquer, and most players coming off the bench from last year; AJ Hernandez, Matt Lee, Aaron Stencel, Brian Duda, Kai Messeroll, and more. The team has also brought up three freshmen from last year’s middle school team to complete the varsity roster for this season.

Every Season is like building a new house, we feel like we have a strong foundation, and looking forward to seeing what we can build.

— Coach David Drew

Although last year was a struggle, this upcoming year looks to be a big turnaround for the boy’s team. Their preseason schedule will hopefully prepare them for success once their opening game on December 20th comes followed by games against Neptune, Wall township and Red Bank Regional.

When talking to senior AJ Hernandez about this upcoming season, AJ explained, “I have a lot of confidence in our team this upcoming year. I think the season will be successful, and I think we can win enough games to not only make SCT but also win the divisional title later this year.”

Similar to the boys last year, the girls had a difficult year, finishing 9-16 in the regular season, and going 7-7 in the shore – B South. They lost a good amount of their players due to graduation, Allie Delaney, Riley Sexton, Morgan Woods, and more all graduated in 2019. Their only returning starter is Lila Shaver, who is now a junior. Mr. Drew’s team is very young, but he is planning for success this year, “Every Season is like building a new house, we feel like we have a strong foundation, and looking forward to seeing what we can build.”

You can catch the girl’s first game at home on December 20th against Jackson Liberty to open up the season.
