The college basketball season is underway! Through the first week of action, we as fans have gotten a glimpse at what’s to come throughout the year. Some teams look great, some teams look rough, and some teams are profiled by question marks and confusion. Here is a rundown of what AP Top-25 team looks the best, what team looks the worst, and what teams are a toss-up through the first week of the season.
Best: Kansas
The Jayhawks possess a 2-0 record thus far, and have already taken down #9 Ranked UNC (Univ. of North Carolina, Chapel Hill). Kansas’s lineup includes the likes of Hunter Dickinson, Zeke Mayo, AJ Storr, and more, all of which contributed 10+ points in the win against UNC. As the season progresses, it’ll be a treat to watch Kansas continue their path to the playoffs as the #1 ranked team in the nation!
Worst: Baylor
Despite a ranking of #8 in the AP Top-25 Poll, Baylor has yet to show they deserve their spot. After barely escaping #16 Arkansas in a 72-67 effort, they got creamed by #6 Gonzaga 101-63. Baylor is off to a slow start, with defense becoming hard to find. Star Freshman V.J Edgecomb only scored 4 points in 29 minutes on the court, so if Baylor plans to continue running the offense through him they’re gonna need to get him more open looks, and quickly.
Question Mark: Gonzaga
Weirdly enough, the Zags are one of four teams in the Top-25 to have only played 1 game so far. However, they dismantled #8 Baylor 101-63 in this one game. Now, the reason they’re a question mark and not considered a contender is because we aren’t quite sure yet if they’re legit or if Baylor is just bad this year. One game is too small a sample size to decide if Gonzaga is elite, but one or two more outings like this should have that #6 ranking they hold right now increased quickly.
