Artists don’t need canvases; they need pizza boxes. At Point Pleasant Borough High School, students are creating art using blank pizza boxes. Local artists are also taking part in the art show as well. On March 15th, all the finished pizza boxes will be displayed at the Bricolage Gallery. Artists are using any materials they choose to transform an ordinary pizza box into a work of art.
PPBHS art teacher Mr. Bauer was inspired by a unique art show in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The art in this show was created from cardboard pizza boxes. Each artist had several creative ideas, including different mediums, 3D approaches, and amazing overall designs. Mr. Bauer saw this great idea and brought it to Point Pleasant Boro.
“After being apart of a similar show, I felt this was the perfect opportunity to bring creativity, students, and the community together into an epic, pizza-filled art show” – Mr. Bauer
Juliet Anen’s idea varies from yarn to acrylic paint. She’s using these different mediums to create her idea of a warm feeling through a child’s eyes: “My idea is a bright forest scene, the sun setting in a remote valley with rolling hills of flowers. My goal is to incorporate as many mediums as possible to create a warm feeling. I’m using yarn, felt, glitter, pompoms, gemstones, paint, and more. I love the creativity I was able to express through this project. I want the viewer to feel happy when viewing my piece.”
Anthony El-Semerani’s idea is classic, with a creative twist. He’s creating an original pizza box, however it’s drag queen-themed. He said, “My idea is a drag pizza aesthetic and I’m using acrylic paint to make it colorful and pop. I really enjoy the concept of using pizza boxes as canvases.”
The artists participating are extremely excited about this upcoming art show. Make sure to stop by the Bricolage Gallery on March 15th to check out all the different artworks. There will be complimentary pizza and coffee!
