Senior Events Back and Better than Ever!

In short, 2020 was a year of challenges and cancellations. Last spring, high school students across the country were forced to forfeit many activities including sports and proms. This year, seniors at Point Pleasant Borough High School will get some of those events back, but in a different form.

Homecoming week is upon us and although its not like previous years, the students decorated the hallways as done in the past. The glitter curtains and graduation classes displayed prominently help create a sense of school spirit and community. Walking down the halls, morale is high and students can be heard chatting about the grade level themes. The staff nominated seniors for homecoming court and voting has begun. The ceremony was livestreamed on Facebook, instagram and the district website for all to see Friday, March 26th, 2021.  Traditionally, the ceremony would have been held in October, outside on the Al Saner Field filled with fans. Luckily, technology allowed us to still celebrate these ten senior students virtually. Congratulations to homecoming king and queen, Tom Liggett and Frankie Ryan!

Next, a Senior vs Staff Basketball Game would’ve taken place. This year the administration is focused on something with less physical contact. So, a Senior vs. Staff Kickball Game was created instead! The famous match will go down on May 18th, 2021. Per usual, Mr. Johnson’s sports management class is coordinating the event with fun activities and giveaways in between innings. Your favorite teachers will battle the seniors to see who has the most powerful kick in Boro! Art teacher Mrs. Mitreuter stated, “I’m going to trick everyone when I get up to kick and bunt instead, that’ll show the seniors!”. Good luck to both teams!

Another major upcoming celebration is the Senior Ball! This year it’s outside at Ocean Place in Long Branch. Typically the ball would be inside, but this year in order to accommodate the most number of people and still stay within the CDC and Governor’s restrictions, it will be outside on the beach. The venue is beautiful and students should still plan to attend in formal wear and prom dresses. The date is set for June 3rd, 2021 6-10 pm. A DJ, tons of food, and cozy bonfire with smores will complete the memorable night. Unfortunately it is still uncertain if students can bring dates or not. Administration is waiting on word from the state to see if restrictions loosen before June.

Then, Senior Picnic will be on June 4th, the day after Ball. All seniors are expected to attend. Buses will be transporting students to Black Bear Lake where they’ll spend the day doing various activities outside. Food includes burgers, pasta salad, hot dogs, grilled chicken, macaroni and cheese, and much more. Not only will there be great food, there will also be amusing activities. As a sneak peak there will be a DJ, heated pools, volleyball & basketball courts, and a giant lake waterpark! Needless to say, the day will be full of fun!

Finally, the homestretch of a high school career, graduation! The ceremony will take place on June 18th, 2021. Staff and students alike are looking forward to a smooth sailing day to remember. Similarly to previous years, administration aims to host the event outside on Al Saner Field with the entire senior class together. Additionally, if restrictions lossen, there is a greater chance the students will have family and friends there to support this milestone achievement!
