Athlete’s mental health; a topic that isn’t talked about nearly as much as regular mental health. Many athletes suffer from a low self esteem from participating in their sport that causes their overall mental health to drop. Getting anxious before a game, in their own head after a mistake, it all leads to more serious mental health problems along the way.
With the overall environment of certain sports, many teens refrain from joining sports due to the way that many young teens’ mental health plummets from sports. In today’s current day, many high school sports prioritize the actual game and winning overall rather than the mental state of the team’s athletes. Because of this, there is a decrease in the amount of kids playing sports with the possibility of damage to their mental health from it.
A study run by PubMed Central shows that after the Covid-19 pandemic, young adult athlete depression rose 33% more than it was before the pandemic. The increase in rates over teens battling severe mental health issues has become concerning as the teenage suicide rates is also on the rise as the years progress.
It’s hard for many students to be able to even out how they take care of themselves as a human and as an athlete. It’s important for teenage athletes to remember that they have people around them who are there to help them and support their needs to make sure they don’t struggle alone.
